Occupational Therapy

A child’s occupation is to be a kid! Through the use of play, our occupational therapists help children acquire and maintain the skills needed for the job of living. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Promoting independence in daily living skills, dressing, grooming, and feeding
  • Facilitating developmental play skills
  • Improving fine motor, gross motor, and eye/hand coordination skills
  • Improving sensory processing skills such as organizational, self regulation, behavioral and emotional
  • Improving visual motor/visual perceptual skills including handwriting and coloring
  • Addressing orthopedic complications and helping to increase function through the use of splinting, casting
  • Addressing positioning and seating to promote functional independence

Occupational therapists not only work directly with the child, but also with the family, parents, caregivers, and teachers in order to educate and reinforce specific skills and behaviors which will be used to improve and facilitate the child’s performance and functioning.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Each child’s success is strongly dependent upon parental involvement. Therapy does not stop when the child leaves the clinic, but must be carried through to the home environment. Pediatric therapists specialize in working with parents and caregivers to ensure home programs are in place to make each child’s progress the best is can be!
